Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, specifically marking the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. This moment happened two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston to deliver this important news.
